He Who Knew No Sin

He became sin, who knew no sin

For the father to forsake him

Winning the cursed, he wore our curse

Only because he loved us first

Through him and for him were all things made

By him and to him were we remade

Able to but by his grace

love him and chase his holy face.

Taste and see the Lord is good

Taste and read his sweetest word

Of how he died and rose again

To name the wretch his dearest friend

For should a wave of wrath break forth

From the dam of common grace

And there you stand alone, afraid

Of righteous judgment and earned disgrace

As if the ground right there did open

And the wave was swallowed up

Christ spared us from our assured judgment

And drank our sorry bitter cup

Thus in him, life shall find its worth

All earth through precious second birth

To call us one with God’s own son

Bearing us on till battle’s won

And when this song comes to its end

When mighty king comes back again

From our graves we shall then raise

Singing anew victorious praise
